Hari ini merupakan suatu hari yang hampir, yang nyaris-nyaris bersejarah, tetapi tidak bersejarah. Bukan maksud patik yang hari ini bukan hari yang penting, tetapi hari ini bukanlah hari bersejarah. Mengapa patik berkata demikian?
Ini adalah kerana hari ini adalah hari kemerdekaan Malaysia yang ke-49, Tuanku. Sudah 49 tahun negara berdaulat ini bebas dari belenggu penjajah, tetapi penjajahan itu meninggalkan kesan yang amat mendalam. Salah satu daripadanya adalah suatu bangsa Malaysia, yang belum lagi dapat membebaskan dirinya daripada kesan-kesan ini.
Rakyat-rakyat kita semuanya mempunyai suatu negara, tetapi kita masih terpisah kerana mengikut ethik kita sendiri. Sebagai rakyat dan anak Malaysia, bukankah hari ini merupakan suatu hari di mana kita patut bersatu dan menerima perbezaan antara kita (mengikut bangsa dan agama sendiri) daripada cuba menegaskan suatu bangsa lebih baik daripada yang satu lagi?
