59Minutes: A review

September 29, 2006 at 11:11 pm (Education, Outings)

It’s a truly good show (ok, this is my first play and Emily more or less bullied me into watching this, but please ignore that), but it was a truly enjoyable show. I missed Rojak, the play earlier this year due to work commitments, but I would have been damned if I missed this one too, especially since it was supposed to be done within 59 minutes. And it’s no mean feat. They DID do it within 59 Minutes, and boy was it worth EVERY SECOND.

Before we begin, I would like to THANK Emily for inviting me. It was great seeing you again (and yes, I DO realise I looked like an aunty, and I have to say again: I forgot I was going out in the evening when I got dressed today, SO THERE!). It was also a surprise to see Marvin Wong acting in this play; I had no idea that Marvin was even remotely connected to this whole thing (Nick, you SOOOOO missed a great time. He glomped me. HE GLOMPED ME. Damnit, I should have done that, but that would betray my status as an aunty… WAIT! WHAT AM I SAYING?? *Headdesks*)

In any case, the play consisted of 7 shorts; some a monologues, others a story. I loved all of them, though some more than others. Emily, whoever did the arranging of the shorts should be given an award. It was PERFECT.

Ok, /end spazz.

/Begin spoiler

The play began with a rather interesting but slightly mundane Best Foot Forward. This was a short, simple, and easy-to-understand story that left you wondering if it was meant as a subtle commentary on the world. I love things that can be taken in two different levels or more, and this was certainly one of them. Tell you what… Pak Lah and Dr M should have watched this. It would have been great.

This was followed by a very witty and sharp commetary on society by Lam Wai Yee, in Mother Tongue. She switched between accents very well, and her delivery and comic timing was very nicely done. Snob? Yes. Victim? Yes. Airhead? Yes. Evil wife? DEFINITELY. This was a really good short with a theme of infidelity that led surprisingly well into the next.

Fruitcake was the name of the next short, and it was intense. Sharanya Manivannan was excellent as Lisa, and her voice, and more importantly, the emotions she carried in her voice was nothing short of amazing. There are a few pop culture references (with poor Vinolan Batsalaruban taking most of the jokes) but it was a very well done play. I felt like crying and going up to the stage to hug her; that was how intense the short was. I had to blink rapidly to cover it, yet I felt enraged as well.

Showers of Flowers is my favourite of the lot. Krystle, or was it Doreen, who played the part of the flowergirl, was heart-wrenching. The look on her face, abandoned and pleading, made you want to reach out and take whatever she’s offering, for she’s not selling, nor is she buying. She’s not being calculative; she just wants to give a flower to you. Accepting it may have made you feel like a millionaire; if only to see a (potentially) joyful look on her face. But no on took the flower in the end; I suppose none of us knew whether we should have (that’s a commentary I shall leave to later).

Track was… surreal. And scary. And on so many levels. More later. :p

The World’s Smelliest Durian. Think big durian, only more tongue in cheek and more true to life. More on this later after my bath.

Finally, The Ground Floor, which didn’t make sense. Well, not very, but I loved it for the themes. What are they? Ah, that you’ll have to see it to understand.

So what are you waiting for? It runs only till Sunday! Don’t miss it!

Firefox 2, Developer’s Build

September 29, 2006 at 10:49 am (Geekiness)

Is simply smexy.

First things first. This is a developer’s build, so there are still quite a lot of bugs for them to fix. That said, it’s certainly on usability side. Right now though, there seems to be a little hint of a lag, but it’s certainly much faster than my previous Firefox (v. 1.0.7). There’s also no real lag when it comes to using shortcut keys and opening the program itself, so it’s now easy on the eyes. Resource usage has been cut down to half compared to previous Firefox installations.

The best part is, I’m one of those people who like to type and can misspell cause I’m not looking. Firefox 2 takes care of that, by building a in-line spell checker for you. Since I’m using Writely, this is one of the better features cause I don’t have to enable the spell checker in Writely (cause it’s off by default and I kinda like to keep it that way). It also checks my spelling off writely, and is simply
The part that has me wishing I could make love to it though is a feature that is finally INBUILT into Firefox after all these years:

Restored tabbing.

How many times have you closed a browser tab and cursed cause you forgot to save it? Firefox 2 takes care of that, by allowing you to restore the tabs. This is done through two ways:

> Clicking on the file name in history
> Pressing CTRL + SHIFT + T. The more you press, the further back in history it goes, and the more tabs it opens.

Only Cons I can see so far:

My two themes: glowywine and Black Max Japan are not supported by the latest build (which is for Firefox 2).

No portable FF.

Since I prefer a minimalist Firefox anyway, this doesn’t really matter to me. I’ll wait till the bugs are ironed out before I update my current FF portable on lil Cruizy to FF2.

EDITED CAUSE I SHOULD NOT BE TYPING WHEN HALF-ASLEEP.

Bad Afternoon

September 28, 2006 at 2:52 pm (Personal)

GWARGH.

Morning was great, afternoon not so well. First got a minor reprimand as my colleague and I went out for lunch at the same time; then my new headphones broke after getting caught in the wheels of the chair I sit in.

Fuck.

KANJI

on the lonely rail

my way 重なるよ
God bless…

Lovin’ you

for your lonely heart

God knows…

my way 重なるよ
God bless…

Looping, part 2

September 26, 2006 at 4:24 pm (Personal)

And if you haven’t already guessed by now, am now stuck looping Hirano Aya’s God Knows, which is the Insert Song for the anime, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, aka, Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu in Japanese.

Check the song out on YouTube. The one I keep listening to comes with subtitles , so if I want to sing along (and look like a fool while doing so, which is nothing unusual) I can. This is one of the few songs I’ve heard that just listening to it makes me feel invigorated and alive. It’s also one of the rare ones that describes me at the point I’m at now without me knowing about the meaning of the song beforehand.

Even simply listening to it without the visuals, there’s a strong energy apparent, which is missing in a lot of songs today. You could practically feel every syllable, every note revebertating through your ears. The emotions and the feelings in each word is apparent; you hear a person daring to fight fate and perhaps the man she loved for the right to be with him, and from what I can gather, the right to slap him to remind him. It’s basically a song about fighting for the right to stand for the person you love and care about, even if they reject you.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not about being a slave. It’s about walking the road equally, but with enough strength to still walk away when you’ve had enough.

Also, this is a song with a strong instrument background. In other words, you can actually feel the presence of the guitar and the drums. In fact, there is no other instrument used in the song. You can actually listen to the Karaoke version (available on Gendou, which is one of the best sites on the net!) and judge for yourself.

I’m dissatisfied with the lyrics… will take it down and republish it, sorry for the spam guys. >

Looping

September 26, 2006 at 10:30 am (Personal)

I’m looping Chance! by uverWORLD. It’s really keeping me awake and helping me smile. I’m looping it on youtube, simply because I need the song and not the vid itself. It shouldn’t be long before I can start singing this song. -_-”

To all those who commented on my copy and paste rant on LJ, thank you. And yes… no more emoness in the morning. YAY!
