Tsumetai Yoru Lyrics- Ouran Host Club

August 25, 2006

Taken from here. Kyouya… spectacles, hint of evilness (who am I kidding, he IS evil!) bishie, and omg… so SO MY KIND OF GUY! *Will stop with the fangirling now*

I love your guys. Please note… THIS IS NOT MY TRANSLATION!

Edit: I don’t usually check this blog, but since there seems to be a resurgence of Kyouya fans, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE COMMENTS! I don’t usually reply to most comments as I think they can stand pretty much on their own, but I’d like to ask you all to drop your comments instead in THIS entry. I’ve moved from WordPress.com to my own site, and I hope you guys will enjoy it there too! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT AGAIN!!!

Cold Night

Illuminated by the cold night’s moonlight,
I hid in the shadows projected by the town

Thinking there was not a single thing
left to believe in,
Among the crowds coming and going
in the monochrome world,
I bowed my head

I realized, from your words
The single flower nestled against my feet

As if to insist
that I’m not afraid
even if I lose,
I walked forward…

With only silence
filling my heart,
I have lived until now
never knowing desire

Not even understanding
the meaning of doubt anymore,
Feeling righteousness
in the distorting town,
I was simply swept along, but

*I realized
from your words,
The single flower
nestled against my feet

Even if I insist
that I’m not afraid
of losing,
Time will go on…

* repeat

Note: The “lose” in the fourth and final verses indicates losing someone/something important, not losing at a game or competition.

lovely. sometimes, nowadays, i am led to believe that without pain, there would be no beauty, no true happiness in this life.

    funny, ain’t it?

  2. Lilith said

…It sounds a bit emo and OOC. I imagined that he would sing about money and merits. Funny…

  3. Lilith, it does sound a bit like Kyoya, but I think it’s more IC actually. Kyoya-sempai does have more depth than we normally give him credit for.

Aww! That was kind of sad.. It doesn’t seem like Kyoya and at the same time.. This is probably more that hidden side of him that we don’t know much about yet.. 😦

  5. Kitty: It makee sense, actually. Watch episode 24 and you’ll see what I mean. XD

wow thanks a lot. i’ve been wondering for so long what was this song talking about since it sound so sad. Tamaki’s song sound kinda sad too but it turn out to be the opposite ha ha love his song anyway.

i didn’t espect to see Kyoya’s solf and weak side but then after watched espisode 24 i started to understand him. this song goes really well with his mood ^ ^

  7. Heheh. That was what I thought so too.

Kyouya is fluffeh and Haruhi saw this very well =^^= I have no idea what is so attracting in him as I rather went moe over Tamaki or even the twins but it’s Kyouya who landed on my desktop on a wallpaper. Strange, ne? O_o?

  9. a4chincookie said

^.^; It made me cry the first time I heard it. I was like IT’S…SO…BEAUTIFUL!!! -sob- I felt like the Ootori family when Tamaki was playing piano.

  10. Oneko: LOL. I don’t like the twins all that well but they became my first Ouran wallie. o_O

A4chin: *Hugs and offers tissue* You’re not the only one.

  11. a4chincookie said

    Lol! Arigato, Naoko Kensaku.

When I first started watching I absolutely LOVED the twins. I loved Tamaki but I never really went crazy over him. Just The twins and Hunny. Oddly enough, Tamaki was my first desktop wallpaper. =P
His puppy eyes get me every time! Lol.

oi, I love this song and I love Kyoya~`!
the lyrics are beautiful and Kyoya’s voice made me shiver!! *.*
I’d be disappointed if it was about merits, after all, Kyoya did fall in love with Haruhi and, in my opinion, he’s the best created character in this anime.

  16. rinoa said

Love it, this song is so pretty and …i dont know hot to explain it…

Kyoya is the best character in the serie

And Nuriko, Kyoya dont fall in love with haruhi, he love Tamaki, in the chap 23 (i think O.o) honey-sempai has say that Kyo-chan dont know but he love somebody the same with kaoru (kaoru loves hikaru and kyoya tamaki, but kyoya know that the baka of tamaki love haruhi so he just let them be…)

  17. Baugalk said

Awesomeness! It’s such a beautiful song. I’m gonna memorize it.

  18. Meph said

Yes, Umi. He’s talking about Tamaki. Without him, he wouldn’t have been able to become the person he is. He’d be far more rigid and traditional. Infact, without Tamaki, he wouldn’t even have batted an eyelash at something like a host club. But Tamaki lets him relax and be himself. So he basically owes his ability to surpass his brothers and let go of his father’s hold on him to that flamboyant blond ^_^

And for those who think this is OOC, Kyouya doesn’t love money. He’s just a business man. He was raised to be professional.. but if you watch any episode about him (like 17, 24 or even 25, even though it’s not really about him) that he’s not a very happy person. The host club makes him happy and helping his friends makes him happy… and Tamaki. I’ll admit, he’s like.. in love with Tamaki. I like Tamaki and Haruhi and all, but come on.. Kyouya loves Tamaki.. whether romantic or just a brotherly sort of like (not the TWINS’ version of brotherly love) I’m not sure. But he does love him, certainly.

So I think this song is extremely accurate to him. It shows sort of his transformation from the soft, quiet, traditional person he was raised to be in the verses and then how powerful and moving Tamaki made him in the chorus (he goes from slow, soft, and sad to loud, powerful and full of emotion). It’s a beautiful song and I’m glad I got to read the translation. I know limited Japanese, but I had sort of figured out the general meaning of it. Even better to know what it actually says, even though I was pretty close ^_^

this song is so meaningful and sad but it shows kyoya has true feelings…
yeh, so many people don’t give him much credit, coz they don’t see his true side…

    love this song ^.^

hi! just passing through, and I love having the english translation, the other sites i looked at only had the Romanji lyrics. Anyway, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in and let people know that the person who does the voice for the show and for this song is Masaya Matsukaze. He’s quite popular, and he has appeared on many a tv show. Google him sometime.

  23. Ryuko said

Haha yes, I agree so much with Meph-san’s insightful comment! The lyric definitely hints Tamaki… but boy, does it sound like a sad love song!T^T… This is such a deep beautiful song… just like Kyouya =) The hard shell he wears is a product of his upbringing… all of us have our own you know! But thanks to Tamaki, his strong, beautiful inner nature gradually began to come out of hiding. And Kyouya no longer feels like a slave to his role… he sees that he is in charge of his own destiny. That he can achieve whatever he wishes, if he allows himself to be himself. In the last episode, he went against his father’s orders to halt the hosts from bringing Tamaki back. And he didn’t leave the club like his father wanted to. Also in the last chapter of the manga, he looked for Tamaki’s mother although that obviously has no merits for himself. That’s just a few examples. This guy has a warm heart, he’s just been taught not to show vulnerability and that “you must step over people in business”, which is not exactly true. I think it’s possible to benefit both parties. And THAT is really the “challenge”! 😀 Anyway, concerning the lyrics…
    “The single flower
nestled against my feet” really reminds me of the scene in episode 24 where Kyouya “steps on Tamaki”, and the latter laughs *^^*
And even though “losing someone” and “single flower” could also apply to… perhaps..his feelings for Haruhi… since he does really like and respect her a lot… It was really Tamaki who brought him out of his “unsatisfactory life” and allowed him to dream big. I would hate to think of how lonely Kyouya would be after losing both his best friend and Haruhi XO Argh. The funny thing is, Haruhi’s mother is black-haired, intelligent, and formal… while her dad is(was) a blond okama(sorta host-like) bar worker who’s personality resembles Tama a lot… heheh. I don’t think it’s right for daddy to leave mummy… for daughter… that’s just twisted ;p
Haruhi is such a special girl…and sweety cutie-pie!! She really cares for people!!! She’d be a dream wife for anyone… And she deserves Tamaki…but I just don’t want Kyouya to be left alone and sad. I feel the same way for Kaoru too, though XO I can’t wait to see more manga~~ this thing needs to be solved! But do you think Bisco-san would create a real BL couple? @_@
My humblest apologies for the long comment. I got too involved.
(I would really like to hear your responses though ^3^)

I never really bothered to pay attention to what the lyrics said; most of the time I listen to something, I like it because of the tune.
But listening to this, as well as reading the lyrics over, we see the side of Kyouya that most people DON’T see.
Most people think that if it’s Kyouya, that he’d be singing about money, or profit, or something along the lines of that, but in fact, this song is talking about his “transformation” from how he had been raised up to his current state as of being in the Host Club.
Now I never knew that he liked someone, but I can understand why he has a special bond with Tamaki – to whom this song is probably meant for.

    It’s a nice song anyway~

I read once somewhere that some blogger considered Kyouya a stock character of sorts – a 2D cutout, and I wanted to reach through the computer screen and bitch slap them into next year.

Kyouya is so much more than the typical smarty-pants, slightly (very?) evil, glasses character. Kyouya’s story is one of self-discovery and love and friendship, and I think this song shows how much he can love and care for someone.

I personally don’t think Kyouya is in love with Tamaki romantically. The entire host club loves one another and supports each other like those last few precariously placed JENGA pieces, and Kyouya and Tamaki are the ones at the very bottom that, if even nudged, will take the entire tower down with them.

    That, and I’m a huge Kyouya/Haruhi shipper.

That aside, this song is not a romantic love song, in my opinion. It’s Kyouya loving his position in life right now, but still realizing that eventually, time will pass, and things will change, and he doesn’t want that.

And no matter what that single flower (here, I totally agree to it being Tamaki) insists, things change, and time will pass and go on. The world will keep turning. And I think Kyouya is a little scared of that.

Wow…this song is just…amazing. At first, I didn’t really understand it. I mean, when you compare it to the other “character songs” on the ouran soundrack, where you can totally tell that their song fits their personality, I thought that Kyoya’s song was kind of vague. But now I finally understand that it is not meant to be as simple as the others. Kyoya is such a deep person…it pains me when someone tries to sum him up as “greedy” or “evil”…step into this boy’s shoes. Realize that he has no malice toward his older brothers, though they are the ones standing in the way of his dreams. And yet, he won’t allow anyone to talk bad about them. And countless times in both the manga and the anime, he shows that his “merits” attitude us just a facade…for his deeper personality that he seems to be hiding. He said so himself, in one of the anime episodes, that “I was confident that I could see through other’s facades but that they could never see through mine…”

Does he love Haruhi? I don’t know. Want my opinion? I believe that his love for Tamaki is so great that when he saw that Haruhi wasn’t seeming to show interest in Tamaki, in order to assist his friend, Kyoya decided to make sure that Haruhi would never fall for him either. Hence all the times when he told Haruhi that he was completely different from Tamaki and tried to convince her that unlike Tamaki, he only did things for merits.

Ah, Kyoya. It is your mystery that makes us love you. I hope that you will find happiness, even after Tamaki and Haruhi fall in love…
